B) -3

C) -12

D) 12

3. Find the formula for a line passing through the points (2,8) and (-2, -4).

A) y = 3x + 2

B) y = x + 8

C) y = 3x - 4

D) y = 2x + 2

C) -4

D) 4/3

6. Find the slope of the line that passes through the points (3, -1) and (-5, 3).

7. A line with a slope of 3 passes through (-1, -5) and (k, 4). Find k.

8. Find the equation of a line that is parallel to the line y = 3x + 6 and passes through the point (4,2).

Calculator Lesson for finding the equation of a straight line.

1)  On your TI-83+ calculator, click on the STAT button, then Enter so you can edit lists.

2)  Place the X coordinates into L1, and the Y coordinates into L2.

3)  Click on the STAT button again, and move to the calculate menu at the top of the screen.

4)  Click on LinReg(ax+b) Press enter.

5)  Press enter again, and you will see a screen that gives you:  y=ax+b  (in this case, a stands for slope)

The value for a = slope

The value for b is the Y intercept

By substituting these values into the equation y=mx+b, you will have the equation of the line that connects the two points you have provided coordinates for.
